U.S. mobilists still use computers instead of phones

I’m at the Mobile 2.0 conference run by Mobile Monday and the Open Group. It’s got most of the mobile bloggers you’ll find on Forum Oxford and it’s in San Francisco.

Despite the mobile focus, computers are being used at a roughly 5:1 ratio over phones in the audience to stay connected. Mobile Monday London didn’t have nearly as many computers.

This is consistent with the recent MoCollywood conference finding that 54% of mobile media content conference delegates don’t use mobile media.

I want better devices.

  1. Respectfully I think your count is too high. At my table it is 3:2 mobile to laptop but I bet mobile device coverage is greater than 100% as I have seen some with four mobile devices.

  3. It definitely depends on the table. I’ve seen up to 10:1 in some parts of the room.

  4. Oh, mobile definitely. I’m counting my Blackberry as a mobile and my Mac as a PC.

  5. Hi Barbara - it was great to meet you at the event! Just my ???.02: I was struck by the number of people using iPhones at the event. We made sure we had wifi up and running with the perception that people would use laptops for blogging, which they did, but I think lots of people were also using wifi-connected devices like iPhone and N-series phones. I found that very refreshing.

  6. In all fairness, even mobilists require “real” keyboards to write lengthy, thought-out blog entries, and unless you make it a habit to carry a bluetooth keyboard in your back pocket, you’ll most likely rely on a laptop.

    However, when it comes to the Jaiku backchannel from Mobile2.0, using mobiles was just as good, because the snippets are far shorter.
